Scratchboard or Scraperboard was invented in the 19th Century. It’s a technique in which artists create drawings using tools and sharp knives to etch into a thin layer of white clay or chalk topped with a fine coat of black India ink. During that time this form of illustration quickly became the favorite medium among many artists. This post highlights some examples of Scratchboard illustrations from various talented artists of that era followed by a few videos demonstrating how this wonderful technique is done. Hope you enjoy!

Consider yourself an artist? Have a talent in drawing or inking? These skills can actually transfer over to graphic design extremely fluently. If you have a lot of drawings already lying around doing nothing, there are a variety of ways to digitize these images for the web or even put them in a digital form that allows you to blow them up into massive prints (this is essentially what vector graphics do best).

One trend that is becoming very popular in website design is the integration of natures beautiful elements. Although most of these designs are illustrations of nature such as trees, grass, leaves, water, sky, clouds and even the sun… some web designers are also seamlessly integrating naturalistic background photos into their designs. I hope that these brilliant examples will inspire you to create your own beautiful naturalistic web design. Enjoy!
